    The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Corporal John Nowak (ASN: 11008392), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 601st Tank Destroyer Battalion, 3d Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in Sicily in July 1943. During an enemy tank attack, Corporal Nowak gained the admiration of the officers and men of his company by his superior skill and courage in exposing himself to heavy enemy artillery and machine gun fire to insure most effective fire upon the enemy. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
