The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting a Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster in lieu of a Second Award of the Silver Star to Major (Infantry), [the First Lieutenant] Wilbur J. Lage (0-33011), United States Army, for gallantry in action at Zaragosa, Luzon, Philippine Islands, on 23 December 1941. Major Lage, during a crucial action of the 3d Battalion, which was in danger of being overrun by the enemy, courageously led a counterattack which enabled the battalion to withdraw and thereby avoid serious casualties.
