The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting a Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster in Lieu of a Second Award of the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Infantry) George L. McClanahan, Jr. (ASN: 0-1322059), United States Army, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action against the enemy while serving with the 117th Infantry Regiment, 30th Infantry Division, in action in Germany, on 13 April 1945. When Lieutenant McClanahan’s task force was met by a hail of machine gun fire, he gallantly moved to an exposed position where he fired his machine gun on the enemy, thereby allowing his men to reconnoiter a bridge which crossed the Elbe River. He then continued to lie in his exposed position covering the withdrawal of the men. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by First Lieutenant McClanahan, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
