The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Technician Fourth Grade Roman A. Diaz (ASN: 39262993), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving as a Medical Aidman with the 309th Engineer Combat Battalion, 84th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in Belgium, on 18 – 19 January 1945. When a member of his platoon was injured by an explosion while engaging in clearing a road of mines and booby traps, Technician Fourth Grade Diaz, without regard for his own safety, rushed into the area known to be mined, rendered first aid to his stricken comrade and directed his removal to safety. On the following day, while clearing another mine field, three members of his platoon were seriously injured by an explosion from an anti-tank mine. Again Technician Fourth Grade Diaz, disregarding the danger from hidden mines, rushed to the side of the wounded men, rendered aid to the most seriously wounded and directed their removal. The courageous actions and clear thinking displayed by Technician Fourth Grade Diaz, undoubtedly saving the lives of several men, reflect high credit upon himself and the military service of the United States.
