Casper Clough graduated from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, Class of 1939. During World War II he commanded the 100th Infantry Battalion, a unit made up of first-generation Japanese-American soldiers that became known as the “Purple Heart Battalion” for their record of achievement and sacrifice. He retired as a U.S. Army Colonel in 1967.

    (Citation Needed) – SYNOPSIS: The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting a Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster in lieu of a Second Award of the Silver Star to Major (Infantry) Casper Clough, Jr. (ASN: 0-21979), United States Army, for gallantry in action in connection with combat operations against the enemy while serving as Commanding Officer of the 100th Infantry Battalion (Separate), attached to the 104th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in the European Theater of Operations, in 1944. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Major Clough, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.

Despite heavy enemy fire, Major Clough fearlessly reconnoitered favorable positions for his battalion. His courageous and brilliant leadership under exceptionally adverse conditions, coupled with his keen tactical judgment, aided materially in routing the enemy. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
