Earle Wheeler graduated from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, Class of 1932. He left a teaching position at the Academy to serve in World War II. From October 1, 1962 to July 2, 1964, General Wheeler served as the 23d Chief of Staff of the U.S. Army. From July 3, 1964 to July 2, 1970, he served as the 6th Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. He retired as a U.S. Army General; in 1970, and died on December 18, 1975. He was buried at Arlington National Cemetery.
