The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Brigadier General George Craig Stewart (ASN: 0-15349), United States Army, for gallantry in action as Assistant Division Commander, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 16 March 1951 at Pungam-ni, Korea. On that date General Stewart accompanied the tank-supported lead elements of two infantry battalions in their advance against stubborn resistance to the town of Pungam-ni, their objective for the day. Mounted on a tank of the tank-infantry team and breaking out from a mountain pass after sweeping the enemy from the surrounding hills, General Stewart daringly and with utter disregard for his safety led the advance guard through the heavily mined area and was one of the first to reach the objective. Witnessing this display of audacious leadership on the part of their Assistant Division Commander, the two battalions threw all caution aside and aggressively forged ahead to their objective. General Stewart thereupon once more led the troops in a drive through the town to establish positions to the northwest. With darkness approaching and intense hostile small arms as well as mortar fire falling in the objective area, he personally directed the movement of the tanks in a search of the area by tank fire which resulted in promptly silencing the opposition. Fully exposed to the enemy fire, yet calmly moving about in order best to observe all activity, General Stewart was a decisive factor in the rapid and effective organization of a perimeter defense for the ensuing night. The inspiring example of bold and undaunted leadership and the gallantry in action demonstrated by General Stewart on this occasion reflect utmost credit upon himself and are in keeping with the highest traditions of the Armed Forces of the United States.

    Headquarters, 2d Infantry Division, General Orders No. 193 (June 18, 1951), Amended by G. O. 202 (1951)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting a Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster in lieu of a Second Award of the Silver Star to Brigadier General George Craig Stewart (ASN: 0-15349), United States Army, for gallantry in action as Assistant Division Commander, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy from 17 May to 27 May 1951, in the vicinity of Hongchon and Hyon-ni, Korea. In the early morning hours of 17 May near hill 1051, north of Yongnae-ri, Korea, the enemy attacked in overwhelming numbers, breaking through our lines and forming a dangerous gap in the main line of resistance. As the Commanding General’s representative in the area, General Stewart immediately directed the Commanding Officer of Task Force Zebra to commit his reserve Battalion and seal off the penetration. Counterattacking at his direction, the enemy was hurled back with terrific losses, thus restoring the situation. During the entire enemy offensive and the 2d Division’s counter offensive, General Stewart remained constantly with the front line elements. On 26 and 27 May 1951, General Stewart fearlessly exposed himself to the intense enemy fire in order to encourage the infantry attacking Hyon-ni, Korea. Riding the lead tank until the tank was stopped by intense fire, he proceeded to move forward among the infantry soldiers. His voluntary presence with the attacking units was a source of great inspiration to the officers and men, and his calm efficiency under fire resulted in aggressive action by the infantry thus driving the enemy out of their positions. The gallantry displayed by General Stewart reflects great credit upon himself and upholds the highest traditions of the Military Service of the United States.
