The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting a Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster in lieu of a Second Award of the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Captain (Coast Artillery Corps) Earle Metzger Shiley (ASN: 0-21234), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving as Commanding Officer of the Battery I, 60th Coast Artillery Regiment (Anti-Aircraft), in action on Corregidor, Philippine Islands, from 11 April to 6 May 1942. In command of an antiaircraft machine gun battery located on the northwestern side of Corregidor, Captain Shiley without regard for his personal safety, faced constant enemy artillery fire and aerial bombardment, both day and night, to inspect his battery positions. His heroic and persistent actions provided an Inspiration for his troops and encouraged them to their greatest efforts despite overwhelming odds. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Captain Shiley, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
