(Citation Needed) – SYNOPSIS: The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Brigadier General Edmund Bower Sebree (ASN: 0-12376), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving as Commanding General of the 23d Infantry Division (Americal), in action against the enemy at Guadalcanal, Solomon Islands, in 1942 and 1943. Brigadier General Sebree’s Division was charged with the responsibility of establishing and holding a strategic bridgehead across the Matanikau River. Japanese mortar fire had killed many commissioned and non-commissioned officers, and it appeared the effort would be jeopardized for lack of leadership. Brigadier General Sebree plunged into the front lines, taking personal command of the troops, and securing the bridgehead. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Brigadier General Sebree, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
