The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Army Distinguished Service Medal to Major General Jonathan Owen Seaman (ASN: 0-19385), United States Army, for exceptionally meritorious and distinguished services to the Government of the United States, in a duty of great responsibility, during the period from September 1961 to September 1965, culminating as Commanding General of the 1st Infantry Divison. The singularly distinctive accomplishments of General Seaman and his dedicated contributions in the service of his country reflect the highest credit upon himself and the United States Army. [This award supersedes award of the Legion of Merit (First Oak Leaf Cluster) to General Seaman for exceptionally meritorious service during the period September 1961 to September 1965, as announced in General Orders Number 4, Headquarters, United States Army Continental Command, Fort Monroe, Virginia, dated 1 February 1966.]
