The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain (Infantry) Stephen Bernard Morrissey (ASN: 0-23270), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company L, 3d Battalion, 26th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division in the period from January to April 1943. Captain Morrissey led a night patrol against a considerably superior enemy force. His keen tactical judgment and remarkable bravery under heavy enemy fire accomplished the capture of twenty-one prisoners and the destruction of considerable enemy personnel and material. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.

    The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting a Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster in lieu of a Second Award of the Silver Star to Captain (Infantry) Stephen Bernard Morrissey (ASN: 0-23270), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company L, 3d Battalion, 26th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division, in the vicinity of Mateur, Tunisia, 5 to 7 May 1943. Given the mission of driving the enemy from commanding hill positions, Captain Morrissey, in the face of an intense artillery, machine gun, and small arms barrage, courageously led his company in a successful attack upon the objective. Skillfully organizing his defenses and constantly exposing himself to hostile fire, he directed his men in repulsing a series of fierce German counterattacks. Captain Morrissey’s gallant actions and outstanding leadership were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
