The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain (Infantry) Thomas W. Mellen (ASN: 0-1285267), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company G, 303d Infantry Regiment, 97th Infantry Division, in action at Troisdorf, Germany, on 11 April 1945. In fighting near the town, Captain Mellen, commanding Company G, led his men in an attack against determined enemy resistance in a fortified factory area. By his skillful, courageous leadership, numerous hostile automatic weapons and direct-fire artillery emplacements were destroyed or effectively neutralized. When night came his company had suffered approximately twenty-five per cent casualties and was completely out of contact with friendly forces. Although in a position to withdraw into a protected area, Captain Mellen courageously held the position and by dawn his company had forced the enemy into a confined area of the factory. He then made his way to the battalion command post and personally guided the battalion to a location which hastened the surrender of all enemy in the factory area. Captain Mellen’s gallantry on this occasion reflects high credit upon himself and the Armed Forces.
