On 25 April 1951, near Tongchon-ni, Korea, General Mead assumed the mission of controlling the rear guard action fought by the 3d Infantry Division during its withdrawal from the Imjin River. Under his skillful and personal direction, the vital road junction on the axis of the withdrawal was protected and held until all friendly forces had withdrawn. Flying at low altitudes over the enemy position in a helicopter, General Mead was subjected to severe enemy automatic weapons and small arms fire, but with complete disregard for his personal safety, made repeated flights in order to ascertain the composition and disposition of the hostile forces. His constant vigilance, skillful deployment and unselfish devotion to duty were prime factors in the success of this action. The gallantry and outstanding leadership displayed by General Mead were an inspiration to his men and reflects great credit upon himself and the military service.
