The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Lieutenant Colonel (Corps of Engineers) Robert Worrell Love (ASN: 0-21062), United States Army, for gallantry in action as Commanding Officer of the 2d Engineer Combat Battalion, 2d Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 9 October 1951 in the vicinity of Saegonbae, Korea. On this date, two companies of Colonel Love’s battalion were working on the main route of entrance to Mundon-ni, in an effort to break loose a tank force in order to get behind the enemy’s defense. Colonel Love voluntarily went through both company’s work sites, encouraging the men and supervising the operations. On his visit to the forward elements, the unit was subjected to moderate to intense enemy mortar and artillery fire. In spite of the fact, Colonel Love remained with the men, lending morale support and giving technical assistance where needed. His courageous leadership and calm manner while under enemy fire instilled confidence and inspiration in his men that they successfully completed their mission despite the furious efforts of the enemy. The gallantry in action and devotion to duty displayed by Lieutenant Colonel Love on this occasion reflect great credit upon himself and the military service.
