(Citation Needed) – SYNOPSIS: The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting a Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster in lieu of a Second Award of the Silver Star to Staff Sergeant Alphonse John Lewandowski (ASN: 37163878), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company G, 2d Battalion, 117th Infantry Regiment, 30th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in the European Theater of Operations, in 1944 and 1945. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Staff Sergeant Lewandowski, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.

    The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Staff Sergeant Alphonse John Lewandowski (ASN: 37163878), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company G, 2d Battalion, 117th Infantry Regiment, 30th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 14 November 1944, in Germany. Staff Sergeant Lewandowski’s platoon, leading an assault upon the enemy, was halted by determined enemy resistance consisting of machine gun and rifle fire. Staff Sergeant Lewandowski, acting platoon sergeant, quickly placed his men in position and as soon as effective fire had been placed on the enemy, he contacted a support squad, organized an assault team, and led the men successfully against the enemy strongpoint. Although he was wounded in this action, he gallantly refused aid until the objective was reached. His bravery and brilliant leadership resulted in overcoming the enemy opposition and allowed his entire company to move forward in a successful attack. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Staff Sergeant Lewandowski, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.

    The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting a Second Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster in lieu of a Third Award of the Silver Star to Staff Sergeant Alphonse John Lewandowski (ASN: 37163878), United States Army, for gallantry in action against the enemy while serving with Company G, 2d Battalion, 117th Infantry Regiment, 30th Infantry Division, in action in Germany, on 18 April 1945. When his squad was pinned down in the open and supporting tanks were forced to withdraw, Sergeant Lewandowski, realizing that his men were in grave danger of being killed, gave the order to fix bayonets and gallantly led them in a charge against the enemy positions. The enemy was routed with the capture of eighteen prisoners and an anti-tank gun along with numerous smaller weapons. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Staff Sergeant Lewandowski, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
