The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Staff Sergeant Alphonse John Lewandowski (ASN: 37163878), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company G, 2d Battalion, 117th Infantry Regiment, 30th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 14 November 1944, in Germany. Staff Sergeant Lewandowski’s platoon, leading an assault upon the enemy, was halted by determined enemy resistance consisting of machine gun and rifle fire. Staff Sergeant Lewandowski, acting platoon sergeant, quickly placed his men in position and as soon as effective fire had been placed on the enemy, he contacted a support squad, organized an assault team, and led the men successfully against the enemy strongpoint. Although he was wounded in this action, he gallantly refused aid until the objective was reached. His bravery and brilliant leadership resulted in overcoming the enemy opposition and allowed his entire company to move forward in a successful attack. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Staff Sergeant Lewandowski, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
