The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Technical Sergeant [then Staff Sergeant] Genro Kashiwa (ASN: 30104311), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company L, 442d Regimental Combat Team, in action against the enemy on 7 November 1944 in the vicinity of La Houssiere, France. Assuming command when his Platoon Leader and Sergeant were wounded and evacuated, Sergeant Kashiwa led his platoon in an attack on a well defended hill. He brought his men through a mine field, surprised the enemy, and opening fire with his M-1 rifle, killed three and silenced a machine gun. When two of his men were wounded, he worked his way to them under intense enemy fire, administered first aid and directed their evacuation. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
