(Citation Needed) – SYNOPSIS: Major General John Reed Hodge (ASN: 0-7285), United States Army, was awarded the Army Distinguished Service Medal for exceptionally meritorious and distinguished services to the Government of the United States, in a duty of great responsibility. General Hodge Commanded the 43d Infantry Division during combat against the Japanese forces in New Georgia, Solomon Islands, from 29 July to 8 August 1943. He succeeded to command on the field of battle after the Division had been in continuous action for 30 days and had suffered heavy casualties. Under his aggressive leadership the Division was revitalized and continued the offensive with the zeal of fresh troops taking its assigned objective in the minimum of time. General Hodge inspired his troops by his constant presence at the front and was primarily responsible for the forward drive of the Division which brought the entire operation to a successful conclusion. The singularly distinctive accomplishments of General Hodge reflect the highest credit upon himself and the United States Army.
