The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Colonel (Infantry) Hugh Pate Harris (ASN: 0-18518), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving as Commanding Officer of the 224th Infantry Regiment, 40th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in Korea, in 1953. Colonel Harris, with great personal disregard for his own safety, checked every fortification and entrenchment in his sector of the main line of resistance to assure that all possible defensive measures were being taken at a time when it was believed the enemy was preparing to attack. During these inspections, Colonel Harris exposed himself to sustained enemy fire. His courageous example was an inspiration to all of his troops. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Colonel Harris, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
