On the morning of 17 June 1953, in the vicinity of Chat-Kol, Korea, elements of the Intelligence and Reconnaissance Platoon and Company K were assigned the mission of repairing friendly positions damaged by earlier enemy action. Colonel Easterbrook, Commanding Officer of the 7th Infantry Regiment, was on an inspection tour of the area when enemy mortar and artillery wounded several of the group. Refusing to seek cover, he quickly analyzed the situation and went directly into the impact area. He quickly checked the casualties and insured their rapid evacuation. As the barrage continued, his calm military manner was a source of inspiration to the men. He spoke with the wounded, comforted them and instilled the men with the importance of their mission, causing them to redouble their efforts despite the hazardous conditions under which they toiled. His courageous actions at this time not only served as an inspiration to the group but also contributed materially to the success of the mission and the morale of the men. Colonel Easterbrook’s outstanding gallantry and devotion to duty reflects great credit upon himself and the military service.
