The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private Dirl D. Cooper (ASN: 37277706), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company **, 60th Infantry Regiment, 9th Infantry Division. On ** March, 1943, in Tunisia, North Africa, during a heavy enemy artillery barrage, both the gunner and the assistant gunner on a light machine gun squad were killed. Private Cooper, at the risk of his life, manned the machine gun thus filling the gap left open by the casualties and was outstanding in repelling the enemy attack. Private Cooper’s initiative and bravery under this heavy fire was instrumental in assuring the success of our defense, and in its qualities of inspiration to the entire command. His gallant actions and selfless devotion to duty, without regard for his own safety, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
