The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Specialist Fourth Class Kenneth Cobb (ASN: RA-15931076), United States Army, for gallantry in action. Specialist Fourth Class Cobb distinguished himself by heroic actions, while serving as a rifleman with Company A, 2d Battalion, 27th Infantry Regiment, 25th Infantry Division, on 20 August 1968, in the Republic of Vietnam. While in their night location along a suspected enemy infiltration route, the 3d Platoon of Alpha Company came under an intense enemy attack. During the ensuing battle, Specialist Cobb crawled through a heavy volume of fire in order to utilize a 90-mm. recoilless rifle. Finding the weapon inoperable, Specialist Cobb fixed the weapon and fired canister rounds into the advancing hostile forces completely destroying them. When enemy fire rendered the weapon inoperable, he continued to place devastating fire on the enemy with his M-16. Throughout the action, Specialist Cobb, with complete disregard for his own safety, exposed himself to the withering hostile fire as he treated the wounded, relayed information from position to position, and distributed desperately needed ammunition. On one occasion, Specialist Cobb utilized hand grenades to stop an enemy attack ten meters from his position. His valorous actions contributed immeasurably to the success of the mission and defeat of the numerically superior enemy force. Specialist Cobb’s personal bravery, aggressiveness, and devotion to duty are in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, the 25th Infantry Division, and the United States Army.
