The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting a Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster in Lieu of a Second Award of the Silver Star to Major (Coast Artillery Corps) Aaron Alexander Abston (ASN: 0-21391), United States Army, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action against the enemy while serving as Commanding Officer, Battery G, 60th Coast Artillery Regiment (Anti Aircraft), in action at Fort Mills, in the Philippine Islands, on 2 May 1942. A member of the 60th Coast Artillery Regiment (Anti Aircraft), Major Abston voluntarily left his position of safety, and, bravely exposing himself to enemy artillery fire and aerial bombing, was the first man to enter Battery Geary where one powder magazine had already exploded and another was burning and in imminent danger of blowing up. There he assisted in rescuing several men who had been imprisoned in the wreckage. Returning to Wheeler Tunnel for aid, he met a rescue crew and led them to Battery Geary where he skillfully directed the removal of the injured. By his courageous action at the risk of his life, Major Abston set an inspiring example of outstanding bravery in the heroic defense of Corregidor. Major Abston’s gallant actions and selfless devotion to duty, without regard for his own safety, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
