The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Infantry) Henry C. Abbes (ASN: 0-1290194), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 117th Infantry Regiment, 30th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 15 July 1944. First Lieutenant Abbes was assigned to duty with an infantry organization which was suddenly brought under very heavy enemy shell fire. The intensity of the artillery caused many of his troops to become panic-stricken. With complete disregard for his personal safety, First Lieutenant Abbes moved from place to place over the hazardous area, encouraging and rallying his men and completely effecting a reorganization. Although wounded during his activities, First Lieutenant Abbes refused medical aid until the next day. The aggressive leadership demonstrated by his prompt action and the splendid courage exhibited by First Lieutenant Abbes were outstanding. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
