Conrad Begaye is a Navajo Indian from Arizona. His wife, Staff Sergeant Idellia Beletso, is a flight medic serving with the United States Air Force.

Matthew Matlock entered service in the U.S. Army, following in the footsteps of his father, a retired U.S. Army Special Forces master sergeant.

Specialist Gregory Water, the Medic traveling in the MRAP that was damaged, also received the Silver Star for his actions in this incident.

James Ashley’s grandfather was a veteran of service in the U.S. Navy during World War II.
