The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Bronze Star Medal with Combat “V” to Captain (Infantry) Letcher Crawford (ASN: 0-1313974), United States Army, for heroic achievement during ground operations against a hostile force as a member of Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 1st Battalion, 7th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy in Korea. On 3 July 1951, near Turyo-Bong, Korea, Captain Crawford’s battalion was attacking Hill 682 when supplies of ammunition and water grew dangerously low. By reconnaissance with a tank platoon, he selected a more forward position for a supply point in order to re-supply the forward elements. In the gathering darkness of nightfall and under hostile observation, Captain Crawford was supervising the establishment of the new supply location, when the enemy opened fire on the area. Although the tanks had previously withdrawn and it was nearly dark, Captain Crawford voluntarily remained in his vulnerable position and resolutely continued to supervise the transporting of supplies to the forward units until the operation was completed. Captain Crawford’s steadfast heroism reflects the highest credit upon himself and the military service.

  • Soldier’s Medal

    Service:

    United States Army

    Rank:

    Major (Infantry)

    Action Date:

    May 21, 1959

Department of the Army, General Orders No. 43 (December 4, 1959)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Soldier’s Medal to Major (Infantry) Letcher Crawford, United States Army, for heroism at the risk of life not involving conflict with an armed enemy at the Mountain Ranger Camp, Dahlonega, Georgia on 21 May 1959. While participating as an observer in an air landed Ranger patrol operation, Major Crawford was a passenger in a helicopter which crashed immediately after takeoff. Despite the fact that he was the most seriously injured of all passengers, he assumed immediate control as senior officer aboard and without hesitation or concern for his own personal safety, successfully evacuated all passengers from the wrecked helicopter. In constant danger of possible explosion and fire, his high sense of duty and unselfish regard for his fellow men ensured that all passengers were out of the aircraft prior to moving himself from an extremely perilous position. It was only after he had cleared the crash area that he realized he himself was injured. Major Crawford’s prompt, courageous actions and presence of mind in this sudden emergency are worthy of emulation, and reflect distinct credit on himself and the military service.
