The President of the United States of America, in the name of Congress, takes pleasure in presenting the Medal of Honor to Sergeant Major Frank W. Haskell, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism on 1 June 1862, while serving with 3d Maine Infantry, in action at Fair Oaks, Virginia. Sergeant Major Haskell assumed command of a portion of the left wing of his regiment, all the company officers present having been killed or disabled, led it gallantly across a stream and contributed most effectively to the success of the action.
