The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Private First Class Daniel E. Kuszmaul (ASN: 35345415), United States Army, for gallantry in action on 19 September 1944, at ****, Germany. Private First Class Kuszmaul was an assistant squad leader, Company G, 3d Battalion, 508th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 82d Airborne Division. While on a reconnaissance patrol with his platoon investigating Hill ***, he discovered an enemy machine gun emplacement which had pinned his platoon to the ground. Private First Class Kuszmaul, after discovering the gun position, began to move towards it though he was still under fire. He managed to crawl within a few yards of the position to where he could attack. With two fragmentation grenades he assaulted and charged the machine gun position firing his Thompson Sub-Machine Gun, and disabled or destroyed the crew. Private First Class Kuszmaul was fatally wounded in this action but this courageous and heroic act allowed his patrol to continue on its mission. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
