Headquarters, 82d Airborne Division, General Orders No. 61 (November 30, 1944)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Private Harry M. Rhodus (ASN: 35877555), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company D, 2d Battalion, 508th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 82d Airborne Division, in action on 21 September 1944 at ****, Germany. An enemy force of battalion strength, supported by heavy artillery and 20-mm. guns, threatened the flank of Private Rhodus company’s defensive position at the town of ****, Germany. During the height of this attack, Private Rhodus held his position and brought effective fire upon the advancing enemy. Twice the enemy attempted to penetrate through Private Rhodus, but were stopped by his accurate fire. When the company was ordered to occupy stronger positions, Private Rhodus remained as a rear guard and continued to hold up the German advance. Against thrusts made at our displacing troops, he stopped each effort until our men were safely in position. Fighting his way alone, he rejoined the company. This courageous action by Private Rhodus assured a successful evacuation to new positions. His determined stand against superior forces delayed the enemy at a critical stage and enabled us to remove all heavy weapons and evacuate our wounded. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
