Headquarters, 82d Airborne Division, General Orders No. 60 (November 30, 1944)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Technical Sergeant Glenn Jonas (ASN: 15055514), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company G, 3d Battalion, 325th Glider Infantry Regiment, 82d Airborne Division, in action on 28 September 1944, near ****, Holland. During an attack into Kiekburg Weeds against a superior dug-in enemy, Technical Sergeant Jonas prevented heavy casualties by daring action. His company was held down on flat terrain outside the woods by heavy enemy machine gun fire from the flank. He personally organized and led a group to rush the enemy gun and put it out of action. By skillfully working his small group up behind a tiny rise in the ground, he put them into a position where they could bring a base of fire to bear on the enemy. Under cover of this rifle fire, Technical Sergeant Jonas rushed the nest across 25 yards of open terrain and wiped it out with a Gammon Grenade. He sustained two bullet wounds from this action, but would not be evacuated until the entire company reached their first objective, the edge of the woods. His heroic action above and beyond the call of duty saved many lives and was directly instrumental in making it possible for the company to take its objective. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
