The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Private James R. Harris (ASN: 20443393), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company E, 2d Battalion, 505th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 82d Airborne Division, in action on or about 11 July 1943, three miles north of ****. Private Harris, without regard to his own safety, voluntarily attempted to knock out an enemy sniper who had been seriously hampering operations of his patrol. In accomplishing his mission, Private Harris was obliged to expose himself, thereby receiving severe wounds from which he later died. His action enabled his patrol to fulfill its assignment. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
