The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Raymond Gonzales (ASN: 36565401), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company C, 1st Battalion, 505th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 82d Airborne Division, in action on 24 September 1944, about one mile from ****, Holland. The 1st Platoon of Company C was caught between heavy enemy machine gun fire from both flanks while moving through the woods after having been relieved. Under such conditions, the platoon was unable to remain and fight and had to withdraw. Upon reaching a comparatively safe position, Private First Class Gonzales dropped his equipment and declared that he was going to return to the area and bring back the wounded. With total disregard for his own personal safety, he made two trips through severe enemy machine gun and sniper fire and carried wounded men back to safety. Private First Class Gonzales’ deeds were beyond the call of duty and saved two comrades from death or capture. His gallantry was in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Army.
