The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Platoon Sergeant David L. Wolff (ASN: RA-18483093), United States Army, for gallantry in action while engaged in military conflict with an armed hostile force while serving with Troop L, 3d Squadron, 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment, in the Republic of Vietnam. Platoon Sergeant Wolff distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous actions on 30 April 1967 while serving as Platoon Sergeant on a search and destroy mission during Operation Manhattan in the jungles of Vietnam. As the unit moved through an area of thick vegetation it suddenly came under an intense volume of recoilless rifle, automatic weapons and small arms fire from a well concealed Viet Cong force. When one of the Armored Cavalry Assault Vehicles was hit by a recoilless rifle round Sergeant Wolff immediately dismounted and courageously dashed through a withering hail of enemy fire to aid the occupants of the disabled vehicle. Without regard for personal safety, Sergeant Wolff evacuated the two wounded personnel inside and assisted in administering first aid while also requesting and coordinating a medical evacuation helicopter. During the ensuing assault, a second vehicle hit a mine and was disabled. Again, Sergeant Wolff disregarded the imminent dangers and sprinted to the vehicle. Personally evacuating the critically burned driver, Sergeant Wolff valiantly carried the injured man through the intense volley of fire and burning gasoline to a position of relative safety. After evacuating the wounded man, Sergeant Wolff returned to the fierce fire fight and aggressively directed accurate and effective fire upon the insurgents. Platoon Sergeant Wolff’s extraordinary heroism in close combat with a numerically superior Viet Cong force is in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflects great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
