The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Lieutenant Colonel Robert H. Williams (MCSN: 0-4469), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity as Executive Officer of the Twenty-eighth Marines, FIFTH Marine Division in action against enemy Japanese forces during the assault on Iwo Jima, Volcano Islands from 19 February to 26 March 1945. When the advance of his regiment, during the assault on Mount Suribachi, was retarded by adverse weather conditions and by extremely severe casualties, Lieutenant Colonel Williams went to the front lines and constantly exposed to hostile artillery, mortar and small arms fire, courageously moved among his men to direct them in an attack which resulted in the capture of the position. By his outstanding professional skill and courage, Lieutenant Colonel Williams served as an inspiration to the officers and men of his regiment and rendered invaluable assistance to his Commanding Officer throughout the Iwo Jima Operation. His devotion to duty was at all times in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
