While serving with Company D, 3d Ammunition Train, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, Wagoner Gerard displayed exceptional courage near Crezancy, France, 15 – 18 July 1918. When the driver of the truck to which he was assigned deserted it under heavy fire, he stayed at his post and three days later carried his truck back to its organization.
