Thomas Egerton was a Methodist minister and a veteran of service during the Spanish-American War. In 1917 he left his pastorate at the Congregational Church in Lacon, Illinois, to become an Army chaplain serving with the American Expeditionary Forces in France.

Chaplain Egerton distinguished himself by gallantry in action while serving with the 131st Infantry Regiment, 33d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, in action near Chipilly Ridge, France, 10 – 19 August 1918, in repairing telephone lines under heavy shell fire.
