Headquarters, 26th Infantry Division, General Orders No. 118 (1945)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant Norwood R. Yeatts, United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 26th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy during fighting in the vicinity of Lanz, Germany, on 3 May 1945. Sergeant Yeatts, an infantryman, distinguished himself when during operations when elements of his company were held by intense enemy machine gun fire. Deploying men to advanced positions, Sergeant Yeatts crawled forward and making his way to the right flank of enemy gun emplacements, approached within 75 yards of the position. Then, with accurate rifle, grenade, and small arms fire, he killed one of the enemy gun crew, forced two others to surrender, and silenced the weapon. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
