Headquarters, 37th Infantry Division, General Orders No. 116 (May 15, 1945)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class John L. Stamer (ASN: 35001213), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the Medical Detachment, 148th Infantry Regiment, 37th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy at Luzon, Philippine Islands, on 18 February, 1945. A litter squad headed by Private Stamer was called upon to rescue three wounded men at the University of the Philippines. In order to reach the men it was necessary to pass between two buildings, where the enemy had been placing heavy machine gun fire. Private Stamer ordered his squad to stay under cover, dashed across the lane of fire, and helped a wounded man to safety. Once again he crossed the lane of fire to rescue a second man. Then, leading his squad, he crossed for the third time to help carry a man to safety on a litter. His heroic action was a major factor in saving the lives of three men. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
