Pharmacist’s Mate Third Class Patterson distinguished himself by gallantry in action while serving as a Corpsman attached to the Fifth Regiment (Marines), 2d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, in action against the enemy in the Meuse-Argonne Sector, France, during World War I.

Pharmacist’s Mate Third Class Patterson distinguished himself by gallantry in action while serving as a Corpsman attached to the 47th Company, Fifth Regiment (Marines), 2d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, in action near Chateau-Thierry, France, in June 1918. With five other Hospital Corpsmen attached to the 47th Company, he was notable in his cool and courageous conduct in receiving wounded and rendering first aid under machine-gun and shrapnel fire.
