Headquarters, 37th Infantry Division, General Orders No. 115 (May 14, 1945)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Harold J. Nye (ASN: 36419397), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the Medical Detachment, 129th Infantry Regiment, 37th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy at Luzon, Philippine Islands, on 31 January 1945. Private Nye, an aid man with an infantry company, voluntarily crawled 200 yards up a steep hill fully exposed to enemy machine gun and rifle fire in order to give immediate first aid to a seriously wounded comrade. Although Private Nye had been ordered to remain in defilade because the hill was under intense hostile fire, he requested that he be allowed to undertake the hazardous mission when he learned of the wounded man’s plight. His courageous and rapid action saved the life of the wounded man. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
