Headquarters, 37th Infantry Division, General Orders No. 243 (August 15, 945)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Staff Sergeant Kenneth E. Miller (ASN: 37114130), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company K, 3d Battalion, 129th Infantry Regiment, 37th Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy at Luzon, Philippine Islands, during World War II. On 23 February 1945 when several attempts to destroy enemy resistance in a building in the Intramuros section of Manila had failed, Sergeant Miller undertook the mission alone. Under covering fire from his squad he crawled to a position within striking distance of the structure, signaled for the friendly fire to lift, and courageously leaped into the doorway firing his rifle. The Japanese, completely surprised, returned wild fire, but Sergeant Miller’s effective fire killed the three enemy soldiers in the room before harm was done to our forces. The elimination of this strong point enabled the assaulting company to continue its advance. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
