The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Technical Sergeant Brant Johnson (ASN: 34174376), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company E, 2d Battalion, 145th Infantry Regiment, 37th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in the Philippine Islands, on 2 may 1945. Technical Sergeant Johnson’s company was attacking along a ridge at Mount Pacawagan when it suddenly received machine gun and rifle fire from an enemy group on the flank. Technical Sergeant Johnson, the platoon leader of the support platoon, immediately deployed his men to bring fire upon the Japanese, and then courageously moved from one vantage point to another, continually exposing himself to the intense hostile fire, in order to point out targets to his men and direct their fire. As the friendly fire increased in accuracy and intensity, the enemy fire power was reduced, and Technical Sergeant Johnson was able to lead two squads to within 40 yards of the Japanese emplacements. Then, he jumped to his feet and led a furious assault, which overran the enemy strong point and annihilated the hostile force. Technical Sergeant Johnson’s aggressive leadership and tactical skill enabled his platoon to eliminate a serious threat and helped his company to successfully accomplish its mission. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Technical Sergeant Johnson, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
