Headquarters, 37th Infantry Division, General Orders No. 105 (May 2, 1945)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain (Medical Corps) James J. Daly (ASN: 0-474262), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving as a Medical Officer with the Medical Detachment, 129th Infantry Regiment, 37th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy at Luzon, Philippine Islands, from 28 January to 10 February 1945. As Surgeon of an infantry battalion, Captain Daly displayed outstanding courage and efficiency in caring for seriously wounded men while his aid station was being subjected to intense enemy mortar and artillery fire. On three different occasions Captain Daly exposed himself to hostile fire to administer medical aid to injured soldiers, despite danger from enemy shells which were exploding sometimes within fifteen yards of his position. When his own unit was in reserve, Captain Daly voluntarily went to the assistance of another surgeon whose unit was engaged in heavy combat with the enemy. Through Captain Daly’s courageous efforts the lives of many seriously wounded men were saved. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
