Headquarters, 37th Infantry Division, General Orders No. 121 (May 19, 1945)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Jesse Corter (ASN: 37488804), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 37th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy at Luzon, Philippine Islands, on 12 February, 1945. When a platoon of his company was halted by intense enemy machine gun cross fire, Private Corter, a rocket launcher operator, deliberately exposed himself to the hostile fire in order to locate the Japanese positions. He ascertained the approximate location of the gun on his left flank and fired two rounds neutralizing the hostile weapon and killing five enemy soldiers. He then crawled forward over open terrain under heavy enemy fire, and placed six well-aimed rounds on a second pillbox, destroying another hostile machine gun and killing the four-man crew. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
