The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Rudolph C. Boyce (ASN: 11015893), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Headquarters Company, 1st Battalion, 148th Infantry Regiment, 37th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy at Luzon, Philippine Islands, on 17 April 1945. During an intense and sustained enemy mortar barrage, Private Boyce, an ammunition bearer, voluntarily left a position of comparative safety to help carry four badly wounded men down a difficult and steep mountain trail to a Battalion Aid Station. Then, despite his exhaustion, Private Boyce once again displayed outstanding courage by crawling 30 yards under fire of a Japanese light machine gun to rescue a wounded rifleman who was lying in an exposed position. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
