The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Louis J. Bell (ASN: 34139738), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company I, 3d Battalion, 129th Infantry Regiment, 37th Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy at Luzon, Philippine Islands, during World War II. During the attack against Fort Stotsenburg on 29 January 1945, Private Bell displayed outstanding courage while delivering messages in the face of intense enemy fire during a tank supported infantry attack. Exposing himself to hostile fire on numerous occasions, he relayed his company commander’s instructions to the tank commander and was of immeasurable assistance in the successful completion of the attack. During the times that he remained at the tank, Private Bell walked directly behind the vehicle, remaining cool and collected at all times, despite the fire directed at both him and the tank. Later, when he was under heavy fire from hostile tanks, Private Bell made his way to a covered position from where he killed one enemy soldier and by his aggressive action caused the hostile tanks to so change their tactical maneuver that distinct advantage was afforded to our forces. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
