The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain Dennis L. Moorehead, United States Army, for gallantry in action on 23 June 1966, during combat operations against an armed enemy of the United States, as a Platoon Leader, Company Alpha, Second Battalion, Sixteenth Infantry Regiment, First Infantry Division, while serving in the Republic of Vietnam. Captain Moorehead was leading his men during combat operations and came upon an enemy cache of rice, which he was ordered to destroy. He then led a small unit into the dense canopy to scout out the area and discovered that the enemy was waiting for the company to ambush. He lead an attack on the enemy position to warn the other platoons and to dislodge the enemy. Seeing that the enemy soldiers were attempting to surround his squad, he used a grenade launcher to subdue the attack and save his men. Without the actions of Captain Moorehead, the enemy would have ambushed the unit and overrun their position. Captain Moorehead’s distinctive accomplishments are in keeping with the finest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself, the First Infantry Division and the United States Army.
