    The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Soldier’s Medal to Captain (Medical Corps) Robert A. Nachtwey (ASN: 0-445802), United States Army, for heroism at the risk of life not involving conflict with an armed enemy while serving with the 359th Infantry Regiment, 90th Infantry Division. On 7 June 1944 when the S. S. ****, struck a mine, Captain Nachtwey was painfully injured by the explosion. Obviously in great pain, Captain Nachtwey insisted upon administering aid to numerous wounded soldiers and would not permit himself to be treated until all casualties were evacuated from the sinking ship. Captain Nachtwey’s unselfish devotion to duty facilitated the prompt rescue of all personnel in the short time the vessel remained afloat.
