Private Auwerter distinguished himself by gallantry in action while serving with Company G, 5th Regiment (Marines), 2d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, in action near Bayonville, France, 1 November 1918, while delivering a message to his platoon commander. He was killed in the performance of this act.
