The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Infantry) Ellsworth H. Howard (ASN: 0-1011741), United States Army, for gallantry in action against the enemy while serving with the 90th Infantry Division in Northern France. On 16 August 1944 in the vicinity of ****, France, when his section of tanks had penetrated the town, after heavy fighting and fighting still continued on the edges of the town, his ammunition became very low. There was a danger of the enemy regaining the town should he remove his tanks to re-supply them with ammunition. Lieutenant Howard and one companion, loaded a quarter-ton truck with the needed ammunition, ran a gauntlet of fire to reach the tank section, enabling it to maintain its position. His gallant action contributed to the holding of this important key to the **** position, which resulted later in enormous destruction of enemy material and personnel and was in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service.
